Guru Nanak Dev Ji (1469-1539)

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the first of the Ten Gurus. He showed the concept of Ik Onkar (God is One) to the world. He was born on April 14, 1469, at Pakistan. There is a Gurudwara at the place called Nankana Sahib. His parents were Kalyan Das Ji (Mehta Kalu Ji), and Mata Tripta Ji. He also had a sister named Bibi Nanaki Ji. At a young age guru, ji learned Punjabi, Sanskrit, and Persian. He revolted against ritualism, caste, prejudices, hypocrisy, and idolatry. One day when he went to bathe in the river guru sahib did not come out for three days. At that time the people thought he had drowned all except his sister Bibi Nanaki. Then when he came out, Guru Nanak was enlightened. After that, he showed the new religion named Sikhism and decided to spread it further. During his four journeys, he traveled to all parts if India to Arabia, Persia, Mecca, and Baghdad. He spoke to Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Parsees, and Muslims. He spoke in many pilgrimage sites.

He never asked for any followers he only asked Muslims to be true Muslims and Hindus to be true Hindus. On 24th of September 1487, Guru Nanak married Mata Sulakhani, daughter of Mul Chand and Chando Rani. They had two sons. Sri Chand (1494-1629) and Lakhmi Chand (1497-1655) who later founded the Udasi sect. After his odysseys guru ji settled in Kartarpur. The night before his death Guru requested that the Sikhs and Hindus put flowers on his right side and the Muslims put flowers on his left side. He then told them that funeral rites would be determined by whichever side of flowers didn’t wilt over the night. On September 22, 1536, AD Guru Nanak Dev Ji took his last breath. When the devotees returned, they carefully removed the sheet that covered the body. But, not a trace was left of the guru ji’s body. Only fresh flowers remained on all sides, and not one had wilted. A gurudwara know stands in that place to commemorate the first guru.
