Guru Gobind Singh Ji

Guru Gobind Singh Ji was born on January 5, 1667 in Patna, Bihar, with the name of Gobind Rai. When Gobind Rai was born, Pir Bhokan Shah presented two bowls to Guru Ji. One with milk and the other with water, representing the religions Islam and Hinduism. Guru Sahib smiled and put his hands on both bowls. When Guru Ji was young they moved to Anandpur Sahib, where he learned reading and writing in Punjabi, Braj, Sanskrit, and Persian at a young age. When Guru Sahib was 9 years old, The Brahmin Pandits came to Anandpur begging for help. When he found out what the problem was, he told Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, “who could be a more holy man that you?” and that was when the Pandits were sent back and told to tell the authorities that they would convert if they could make the guru convert. Before his father left, Gobind Rai was given the guruship on November 24, 1675. For the first 20 years, Guru Ji lived peacefully in Anandpur, completing his training as a soldier. He hired 52 poets to translate the Hindu poems and studied Persian and Sanskrit. Guru Sahib also founded a gurudwara in Patna and wrote many Banis such as Jaap Sahib, Sawayas, and Akal Ustat during this time. Most of Guru Ji’s work was done during his time at Patna explaining the godly principle and Supreme Being. He disapproved of worship of idols and superstitions and said that a sword is not supposed to represent aggression but self-respect and self-defense.

While Guru Sahib stayed at Patna he practiced many activities such as archery, riding, and swimming. He increased the practice of martial arts and the Rajput hill rulers were envious. Led by Raja Fateh Chand they attacked him but they were defeated at Bhangam, 10km North-East of Patna. A little bit of time after, Guru Ji returned to Anandpur. The Hill Rajas and Moghuls conspired against Guru Sahib together but where defeated many times. While in Anandpur, Guru Ji got a lot of complaints about the masands who took money from the Sikhs and misusing it so he abolished it and told the Sikhs to bring their offerings to Anandpur during the Vaisahki fair that happened annually. The Guru also started a weapon factory to make weapons for the Sikhs. When the Brahmins told him to worship Durga to win victories in war, he twarted their superstitions and told them that your sword should be the Durga the helps you win battles.

On the 30th March, 1699 when the Sikhs gathered in an open diwan at Anandpur for the annual festival of Vaisakhi. On this day, Guru Gobind Singh Ji unsheathed his sword, raised it in the air and yelled, “I want one head, can someone give it to me?” There was a silence in the crowd
