The Banshees forged the blueprint for post-punk/new wave synthpop with their debut 1983 album, Kaleidoscope World. Sparking controversy and prompting mainstream journalists to coin the term “new wave revival”, the album’s notoriety prompted a move from London to New York, where the next album, The Rapture, was recorded. The Banshees moved on from new wave, and Sex Groove marked the departure of their rotating pop and rock four piece format, as drummer Jim Burke filled in with bassist Steve Jansen and Carruthers joined as a guitarist/backing vocalist. But only for the short-lived Creatures project.

Smith entered a six-month hiatus, and returned to the Banshees on their third album, 1987’s Love Bomb. He set off the band’s first critical and commercial success by penning the chugging Crash with Rod Morgenstein of Public Image Ltd on lead guitar.

The change of pace propounded a new direction on the next album, 1990’s The Wild Honeyrocks. Declaring that “making music with attitude isn’t a novelty; it’s a necessity”, it mixed a slightly more guitar-driven Banshees with a junglist/industrial edge. To the surprise of many, the album and its bold fusion of styles was another US chart topper. But the follow-up, 1992’s Supernature, was touted by some as a possible return to the suave, pop-friendly Banshees of The Thorn era. It was also the first Banshees album to feature a whole-hearted contribution from vocalist Siouxsie Sioux.

After a brief “Sleeping with the Elephants” period, the Banshees returned to the London post-punk sound on 1994’s Juju. This hard rock influenced album was Cronos’ swansong, and was the last time Smith contributed to the band’s work. He was also front and centre on the largely recorded-live, live-with-stringed-instruments album BFK.
