‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ was a box office success, and $6 million was spent making the film. That makes it the most expensive film ever made to that time. Cantwell initially stated that the film was shot in 3-D, but he later confessed that the 3-D effects had been added at a later time.[2][9]

The figures in the US include $8,988,760 in theatrical rentals, plus $10,029,586 in television rentals. A total of $11,027,446 was spent on its US$13,725,000 budget. In the UK, the film was successful financially and became the biggest box office hit of the year, grossing $5,172,564.[5] It was also a success in France, Australia, Canada and the Benelux countries.

On the commentary to the Visual Effects in Journey to the Center of the Earth BluRay, it is mentioned that one of the boy’s father, the mayor is playing a sort of verson of pornographer F. Herbert Bormann. This possibly alludes to Bormann, a man so notorious that he is still spoken of today as an evil, madman. A great commentator throughout the commentary is the gentleman who played the boy in the film. His commentary is in perfect synch with what is going on in the film.

The film was distributed by Warner Bros., and premiered in the United States on December 2, 1959, in 2,000 theaters and an additional 1,800 drive-in theaters. The film has been a financial success and has become the number one box office film of the 1960s, was number one again in the 1980s, and again in the 1990s.

I watched the French version of “Journey to the Center of the Earth” last week – directed by Claude Zidi and produced by the same production company as “Le Club des sages-fantasmes”. I liked the French version much better, with its dreams, madness and ice. “Journey to the Center of the Earth” is a great adventure, and the French version is just as entertaining.
