FSX F4 Phantom Torrent

The F-4 Phantom II was developed for the Royal Air Force in the early 1970’s. The US Navy ordered a similar Phantom II variant in 1973, but this was not accepted. But in 1977 the US Navy’s requirements changed and the Navy ordered six aircraft of the Phantom II variant and a further six of the Phantom IIF – the Phantom IIF being powered by the 1,800 Lb thrust Rolls-Royce Spey Mk 621 engine. Both the existing US Navy Phantom II model and the US Navy Phantom IIF were re-equipped with computerised ECM systems (Electronic Countermeasures) and those of the US Navy Phantoms were also fitted with Browning AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles. The US Navy also decided that in future Phantoms would be painted in a common uniform marking scheme, red and yellow – in keeping with the roundels of the US Navy and to reduce confusion. The US Navy F-4M became the first F-4 ‘Phantom’ in the US Navy colours.

The F-4 Phantom II was the last of the ‘Phantom’ models of US Navy F-4s to be developed and production for the US Navy Phantom II ended in 1979. In the same year, Royal Air Force Phantoms were re-armed with the AIM-9L Matador and the AIM-54 Phoenix air to air missiles by LTV Aerospace and were retained in service until the early 1990’s. The Phantom II was also produced in export versions for the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and other operators.

The F-4E (Navy) Phantom II is powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey Mk 621 engines generating 2,291.20 lb thrust each. The air intake for the engine is contained within a long nacelle which extends forward from the wing and is attached to the upper fuselage by a long mid-fuselage strut. The two engines are mounted side-by-side at the leading edge of the wing, just behind the wing root. The F-4E Phantom II is capable of cruise speeds of up to Mach 2.0 (2,170 mph) at FL 450, (Maneuvering speed is Mach 2.0 at FL 425).
