The game was said to have a different development team, a different art team, a different level design team, and a different fight engine than the previous games in the series. Gamasutra quoted Hideaki Itsuno, a former illustrator of the God of War series on the project, saying, āI touched it on the development side and told them, ābe creative and build what you wantā¦ We want to make the action fun. We want the player to express themselvesā¦ If you want to develop a game, I want you to develop the core, the basic concept. I want you to build on that baseā¦ We definitely want to bring the game back to the game that was first released.'ā[189]
According to the developers, the game takes place in between the events of Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Asylum, as well as the animated film Batman: Year One. Batman must investigate the mysterious and sinister activities in the Asylum, which involve manipulating and unleashing The Joker onto the world.[190] The game relied on over 80,000 fans, known as [[Arkham Asylum: Creation]] or [[Arkham Asylum: Origins|origins]], to develop the game, and distributed a free demo among these fans to get their opinions on the game. According to Eidos, this is the first time the publisher has invited enthusiasts to help them develop a game. They were also given access to all of the gameās data, enabling them to create their own versions of the game.[191]
The gameās plot focuses on the Joker putting his twisted plan into action in order to lure Batman to him, where he plans to escape from prison and take over Gotham using various Arkham patients, while keeping Batman trapped inside the Asylum. According to the developers, Arkham Asylum was the most challenging game they had worked on. They said, āAfter the beginning of the game, we really felt the pressure of not wanting it to fall apart. We had really high expectations for this game. We didnāt want it to be just a by the numbers action game with the graphics and that was itā¦ We wanted to put a lot of time into what we doā¦ We wanted to push out something special.ā
