The ZetaTag Auto-Renamer application was designed to be a quick and easy tool to rename music files into a format that is easily recognized by Humans. It uses tag information to automatically rename all MP3, WMA, and OGG music files to the following format:
Artist – Album – Track Number – Track Name.ext
It automatically traverses subdirectories and will rename any files it finds. Files without a full set of tag information for artist, album, track number, and track name will not be renamed.
This application does not allow configuration beyond the separator character (some people like to use underscores because they are more internet-friendly). It does only one thing and it does it well – it changes filenames to the “one true format”. It’s pretty quick, too. On our test system, it took 50 seconds to process 2600 files in 54 subdirectories.
This program was created for the purpose of maintaining our music collection, but it is provided for free here in case it will be useful to others.

Reads the tag information from the filenames and renames them using the information provided.
CONFIGURATION:
Select the directories where you would like to be able to search for files (including the hidden d:\ recycle.bin directory, you can just tell it not to recurse into it by leaving it blank). Also, by default it will search the first 4 subdirectories of a directory, you can change this by changing the number in the first line of the application.
FILTER:
You can filter the files it will be able to rename using the Filter menu. By default, it will not rename any files it cannot find the tag information for.
ZETA AND THE HARDWARE:
You can select to use Microsoft Zeta Disk to automate file renaming, or you can select to use the normal Zeta Disk drive without the Zeta software. (Please read Zeta’s website to learn about this program, as it is very useful)
ZETA CONFIGURATION:
Select the disk, number of simultaneous jobs, percent completion, and number of daily backup cycles. If you want to do multiple files at once, you will need to have more than one computer running Zeta.
ZETA DEVELOPER’S OPTIONS:
Select the following in the Developer’s Options menu:
– Do a backup each n days (defaults to 30 minutes)
– Delete the program log when finished (defaults to 1 month)
– Rename with last date
– Rename with first date
If you don’t want to use this feature, you can deselect this menu item.
MUSIC STYLES:
Select the menu item to select the style of the string you wish to use for a given file (artist, album, track number, and track name)
IFX:
Allows you to use a different separator character (defaults to ‘-‘ if you don’t select something else).
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
When importing music, the Zeta will attempt to find the title and artist information from the filename. If it fails, it will attempt to read it from the filename. If it fails to read it, it will create an empty string for these values and try to rename the file with that information. This is normal, but you may experience some rare cases where it does not rename the file.
