Why does window.location appear to return a new position every time I navigate to a different page?

When I navigate from page 1 to page 2, page 2 has a refresh button which redirects me back to page 1, however window.location returns a new position each time.
E.g:
window.location =
window.location.replace( “” );

For this example, let’s say we navigate to page 1, then click on a link that redirects us to page 2. The resulting URL when we click on the refresh button in page 2 is
Has anyone come across this? I’m not asking for a solution, just an explanation of why this happens.

As far as I know, it’s the same as when using a submit button and then refreshing the page with the form data still in the URL. The browser parses the URL to figure out what to do with it and then discards the data.
