I think the previous version of Lightroom and Photoshop were very competitive as they pertained to support for older file formats. I was disappointed, however, because Collage, one of the coolest features of the previous release, no longer works. This format is a newer, and professional incarnation of the old “Photomatix” idea (that’s a new feature in Lightroom. It automatically crops, colors, etc., images for you). If those of us who were using that feature are disappointed, there are other features to like, such as the ability to create slices of an image, a new enhancement feature called “Smart Trim” and others.
Lightroom 5 also has “smart” features that enhance your photos and make them look better than they otherwise might. The “smart” functions can be overwhelming. It will give you suggestions when you are editing a JPG, and it will do that with RAW images, too. Most of the suggestions are pretty obvious. Others are not. Learning about all of these options can be confusing for new users.
Recently, there has been a general decline in hardware prices. I’ve got Photoshop CS5, and I can buy a PC or Mac with a lot less available hard disk space than we got with CS4. Most of us do not have huge, fast Western Digital drives anymore. On the Mac, it doesn’t matter, because Lightroom 5 now asks you to use two drives, rather than one. The previous version of Lightroom had no such limits.
With a grand total of 10 complaints to date (1/15/13), I’m hard-pressing Photoshop CS6 to live up to its potential for me. The Gradient tool prompts you for a color. You can use it to paint a background, the clor of an object, or to combine two colors. You can even create a gradient from two separate colors. You can use it to make a gradient from a color to white or to a different color. You can also use it to create a creative gradient from dark to light. You can also create an animated gradient. You can also use it to create patterns.
