Now, in its third iteration, the campy, B-movie-style sequel ushers in a whole new batch of ghouls, including what may be the series’ biggest surprise, a bloody villain who chomps his way into past Piranha movies with a fierce appetite for humans.
As first reported by MTV, Piranha 3D marks the directorial debut of thriller guru James Gunn, the man behind Slither, Super and Guardians of the Galaxy. Bloody and bloody-minded, it returns Piranha-style to a waterpark in Florida that looks frighteningly familiar.
For those who haven’t seen the first film — Film School Rejects readers, the unlucky, and perhaps foolish — the basic lay of the land is that on a beautiful spring day at the same waterslogging destination, a group of teenagers are enjoying a weekend with lots of swimming, sun and nothing in particular to worry about. Unfortunately for them, a bunch of local drunkies put their party at risk when they strut around the lake cross-dressing and mooning. It’s all rather forgettable, except for the boatload of piranhas which pop up to consume the partygoers one by one. For reasons that need not be belabored, this turns a pretty ordinary aquatic outing into a lake-wide freak-out. I won’t spoil it here, except to say that there’s a fun, chaotic, gory third act to the story that might leave you cheering for the cocky, klutzy teens.
Like its predecessor, the sequel takes place in a real venue, this time at the waterpark Pleasure Planet in Williamsport, Pa. Pool operator Steve Christy (Tyler Labine, best known for his role in the upcoming comedy Rosewood) sends plucky undercover agent Jamie (Danielle Panabaker, better known from that other aquatic comedy The Secret Life of the American Teenager) to infiltrate the park to find out what’s going on with the piranhas.
