In this code, we have created and defined a function that prints the given string and then checks to see if there were actually any arguments. If there weren’t, it will print “The function is called with zero arguments,” noting that in a function, we don’t actually have code to run until we actually do pass an actual argument to the function.

The first argument, str, is a string that describes the message to print. The second argument, txt, is a string containing the message to print. The txt argument is optional; if it’s omitted, MATLAB will assume there is no message and so just print a blank line. In this case, it will not print the “The function is called with zero arguments” line.

To print our string and check whether there were any arguments, we use the function called printf, which will actually print the given string and then check to see if any arguments actually got passed to execute some code. The printf function is used for formatting strings, intended for use as a secondary argument to functions.

If the function prints, the number of arguments were not zero. This happens because instead of a number 0, or just a blank line if 0 were specified, a false value (0) was either passed or defaulted. If, however, printf does not print, the number of arguments were zero. This happens because 0 is passed, which is what zero is in MATLAB, and MATLAB’s version of zero is true zero.
