The Kobayashi Maru was the name of a ship known for its merchant voyages and the frequent and apparently unending game of simulated diplomacy it imposed on its crew. In the early days of the 24th century, the Starfleet Commanding Officer ordered Captain James Kirk to be placed in similair circumstances. In the usual course of events, the game had no winners and Kirk couldn’t legally leave the simulation; making the game a “no win scenario.” Note the simulated diplomacy was a diversion, in more ways than one, and Starfleet Academy playboys were not going to learn much about real diplomacy by playing it. The Kobayashi Maru was invented by Kenneth Ducatman, an MIT/Stanford engineering student. He published an article in the May 1931 issue of the magazine, for which he cites no source. [4]

Dr. McCoy was the chief medical officer of the USS Enterprise. While tending to the ship during an away mission, he foiled an attempt on the ship’s life by using his sick bay skills to simulate the effects on the ship of a life-threatening drug overdose. Then, following the successful termination of the so-called “overdose,” he instructed the crew to resume normal activities, and he then used the ship’s communication systems to plot the discharge of the man to be simulated to the nearest Starfleet starbase.

Kobayashi Maru was a fictional ship in a science fiction film of 1957’s “Star Trek,” in which Maru, a slow and practical freighter, was deliberately designed so that it could not be wrecked. When a test involved the “crew” of the ship in a dangerous situation, no rescue attempt was possible, and the simulation was immediate failure. So, in a test of Kirk’s resolve, his attempts to contact Federation starbase protocols and use the ship’s communication systems were futile.
