The site’s consensus states: “A deliciously nasty examination of the exorcism genre that delivers its thrills and chills in a smart and scary fashion”. Metacritic, which uses a normalized rating system, gave the film a score of 71 out of 100, based on reviews from 36 critics, indicating “generally favorable reviews”. Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of “A+” on an A+ to F scale.
Roger Ebert gave the film a perfect four out of four stars, the first four-star review he gave in the history of the Chicago Sun-Times. Rolling Stone gave it a four out of five stars, saying that the film is “brilliantly and exhaustively crafted” and “one of the most richly imagined and cleverly constructed horror films of the last decade.” It received a nomination for Best Horror Film at the 2nd Annual Independent Spirit Awards.
